How to interpret fashion to suit you

I have to admit that I’m not a big follower of fashion. I’m not interested in what the fashion world says I ‘should’ or ‘must’ be wearing; I only care about what I like to wear and what suits me and my personality. I’m bored of the generic advice doled out by the fashion world telling us that everyone MUST wear a certain colour or style to be ‘on trend’. Such advice is designed to create sales, not to treat people like individuals with different tastes, body shapes and personalities.

I’m an advocate of Style over Fashion.  Style is about selecting clothing in styles and colours that suit YOU and YOUR personality, not blindly following the latest fashion craze. I see fashion as a resource – a source of ideas and inspiration rather than a strict set of rules or trends that you need to follow blindly.

So when you’re faced with a myriad of fashion trends, how do you choose? Before you incorporate any fashion trend into your look, consider the following:

Do I like it?

To feel good in your clothing you must like it. There is no point in wearing something just because it is trendy, as you’ll only end up feeling uncomfortable and awkward. Critically look at a fashion trend and consider if you like it. Quite simply, if you don't like it, don't wear it!  If you do like it, what exactly do you like? The whole concept or just parts of it? Remember, that you can pick out elements of a trend rather than wearing the full on look. For example, head to toe florals may not be your thing, but perhaps you like the idea of wearing a small floral motif on say a bag, a pair of shoes or in your jewellery.

Does it suit me?

A trend can be a style, a colour or a combination of the two. In order to feel confident in what you’re wearing, your clothing needs to suit you. Consider if the style will suit your body shape and, if it’s a colour, will it suit your own natural colouring? Read my blog articles How to make the most of your shape and How to wear colour for hints and tips on determining styles and colours to suit you.

Does it express my personality?

Clothing is a unique expression of your personality, and as such needs to be representative of who you are as a person. If you wear something that is not congruent with your personality, you’ll feel inauthentic and not yourself. Remember, style is more important than fashion. Never put an item of clothing on just because it is the latest trend. Only ever add something into your look that fits with your own style, as anything that you really like and that looks good on you never goes out of fashion!
